Summary:
Union Minister Piyush Goyal will lead an Indian delegation to Washington beginning May 16, 2025, for discussions on the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). He is scheduled to meet with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. The four-day negotiations aim to leverage the 90-day tariff reprieve to secure early trade gains, with the first phase of the BTA expected by September–October, following prior meetings between senior negotiators from both countries.
India is seeking tariff concessions on labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, leather, gems and jewellery, apparel, plastics, chemicals, prawns, and select agricultural products. In return, the United States is requesting tariff relief on industrial goods, electric vehicles, wines, dairy products, and tree nuts. Both sides have finalised a 19-chapter framework for the BTA. The United States— India’s largest trading partner—has suspended an additional 26% tariff on Indian goods until July 2025, amid growing concerns over India’s significant trade surplus of $41.18 billion.
