Summary:

India and the Maldives have strengthened bilateral ties by signing 13 MoUs under Phase III of the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP), valued at Rs. 55.28 crore (US$ 6.47 million). These initiatives aim to enhance ferry services, maritime connectivity, and community livelihoods across the Maldives. Signed by senior officials from both countries, the projects are seen as vital lifelines for local communities. Maldivian ministers praised India’s sustained support, describing it as purposeful and transformative, and expressed confidence that these efforts will deepen cooperation and accelerate development, reinforcing the strong, friendly relations between the two nations.

Significant progress has been made in developing a nationwide high-speed ferry network connecting 81 islands across nine atolls. The MoUs with India will further expand these services, strengthening bilateral ties. Originally scheduled for completion in 2027, the project is now expected to conclude by the end of this year. Both ministers expressed gratitude to India for its generous support and highlighted its transformative impact. Phase III of the HICDP scheme was announced during President Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to India last October.
