Summary:

India's natural gas consumption is expected to increase by about 60% by 2030 and more than double by 2040, owing to increased demand for city gas distribution, transportation, and industry. According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), demand is predicted to rise from 187 mmscmd in 2023-24 to 297 mmscmd in 2030 and 496 mmscmd in 2040 under existing policies, with greater forecasts under an optimistic development scenario.

City Gas Distribution (CGD), which includes CNG for automobiles and piped gas for households and industry, will drive natural gas demand, reaching 87 mmscmd by 2030 and 129 mmscmd by 2040. CGD's market share is expected to reach 29% in 2030 and 44% in 2040. To achieve net zero emissions by 2070, India plans to increase gas's energy mix share from 7% to 15%, with LNG demand and transportation likely to rise dramatically.
