Summary:

Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is quickly becoming the preferred option for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) in India. According to a white paper published by the Independent Directors Council (IDC) and backed by Airtel Business, utility technology investment would increase from Rs. 14,500 crore in 2022 to Rs. 32,500 crore by 2027, at a CAGR of 17.7%. This represents a significant drive for digital transformation to reduce AT&C's losses, which were 15.4% in FY23. However, just 9% of the projected smart meter installations were completed by February.

NB-IoT's wide-area, low-power cellular connection makes it perfect for large-scale smart metering. Cellular connections in the utility industry, including NB-IoT, are predicted to increase at a 25.6% CAGR between 2023 and 2027. Airtel Business has a complete IoT portfolio that includes NB-IoT, 5G, 4G, and 2G, as well as platforms for data management, billing, and analytics through Airtel Cloud. Airtel and Secure Meters have deployed 1.7 million NB-IoT smart meters in Bihar and will link over 20 million devices nationally by 2023.
