Summary:
Minister T.R.B. Rajaa revealed that Tamil Nadu plans to export seafood worth Rs. 42,745 crore (US $5 billion) annually. Despite having India's second-longest coastline, the state is sixth in seafood exports. To strengthen its position, Tamil Nadu has planned infrastructure enhancements like as processing units, cold chains, and export-grade packaging facilities. The goal is to move beyond raw exports by adding value locally, increasing incomes, promoting sustainable lives, and ensuring a better future for coastal fishing communities.
The announcement coincided with MPEDA's maiden National Skill Olympiad on seafood value addition, which was hosted at Seafood Expo Bharat in Chennai and aimed to increase value addition and workforce capabilities. India's seafood exports increased 3.71%, from 1.754 million tonnes in FY23 to 1.819 million tonnes in FY24, with Tamil Nadu accounting for around 89,001 tonnes. In FY24, India exported 2,97,571 tonnes of frozen prawns, primarily to the US, producing Rs. 41,719 crore (US$ 4.88 billion).
