Summary:

The Government of India has made a substantial financial commitment to the Vigyan Dhara scheme, significantly increasing its budget to strengthen scientific research, innovation and technological progress. The allocation has surged from Rs. 330.75 crore (US$ 38.21 million) in FY25 to Rs. 1,425 crore (US$ 164.63 million) in FY26, with a cumulative outlay of Rs. 10,579.84 crore (US$ 1.22 billion) from FY22 to FY26 under the 15th Finance Commission. Introduced on January 16, 2025, Vigyan Dhara encompasses three pivotal initiatives focused on scientific capacity building, research and development (R&D) and the deployment of innovative technologies. By supporting advanced research laboratories, fostering international scientific collaborations and promoting technology commercialisation, the scheme enhances synergy between academia, industry and government.

A key focus of the initiative is promoting gender equity in science and technology (S&T). Tailored programs encourage greater participation of women in the field. As of March 2025, the scheme has benefited 57,869 individuals, including students aged 10-15 under the INSPIRE-MANAK initiative. In Telangana alone, Rs. 3.3 crore (US$ 3,81,018) has supported 4,002 beneficiaries. Additionally, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), alongside research fellowships and extramural project funding, has contributed to India’s rising number of scientific publications. Aligning with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, the Vigyan Dhara scheme aspires to establish India as a global leader in science and technology. By fostering inclusive participation and encouraging sustainable development, the scheme sets a solid foundation for innovation-driven growth in the coming decades.
