Summary:
India has had a historic surge in social protection coverage, with ILO data indicating a jump from 19% in 2015 to 64.3% in 2025 - the fastest global expansion. According to the ILOSTAT database, more than 94 crore Indians currently get at least one social security benefit, making India the world's second largest recipient country. This achievement reflects a decade of social reforms and labour-focused policies under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which are consistent with the government's 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' agenda.
Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya met with ILO Director General Gilbert F. Houngbo at the International Labour Conference in Geneva, where he highlighted India's national Social Protection Data Pooling Exercise, which is being done in collaboration with the ILO. The ILO applauded India's rights-based, inclusive approach and released updated data. Mandaviya described the feat as a monument to India's digital government. Phase I includes central sector and women-focused projects in eight states. With additional stages, coverage might approach 100 crore, bolstering India's position in global labour and trade discussions.
