The Union Cabinet has approved an expansion plan for five third-generation IITs - Bhilai, Dharwad, Jammu, Palakkad, and Tirupati—totaling Rs. 11,829 crore (US$ 1,396 million). By FY29, these institutes aim to add 6,576 seats and 130 faculty positions, bringing the total student count to 13,687. The phased expansion includes the development of research parks to enhance industryacademic collaboration.
