Summary:
DP World and Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) have introduced an innovative logistics solution for the petrochemicals sector, transitioning from road to rail transport to significantly lower carbon emissions. This sustainable initiative links RIL’s Jamnagar plant in Gujarat to DP World’s Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Ahmedabad, with further connectivity to Mundra Port. Previously, the Mundra-Jamnagar-Mundra round trip covered approximately 700 kilometers of road transport per container. The newly established Ahmedabad-Jamnagar-Mundra rail corridor now covers the same distance, overcoming the challenges of long-haul road transport while maintaining operational efficiency
The integrated rail service is designed to move up to 1,260 tonnes of cargo in a single operation, consolidating 45 containers and minimizing trailer dependence. This shift eliminates over 700 kilometers of road travel per container, significantly cutting carbon emissions and contributing to RIL’s sustainability goals. Mr. Ganesh Raj, Chief Operating Officer of DP World Marine Services Global, emphasized that the solution aligns with Reliance’s commitment to environmental responsibility, enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring timely exports. Similarly, Mr. Ravikumar Nair, Head of Petrochemical Supply Chain Management Operations at RIL, noted that the transition to rail has optimized operations, reduced emissions and eliminated 45 road-trailer movements, reinforcing RIL’s dedication to building a more sustainable and efficient supply chain.
