Summary:

Apple has officially started exporting its made-in-India AirPods from the Foxconn facility in Hyderabad, with the initial shipments bound for the United States and Europe starting in April 2025. This milestone follows the successful export of iPhones, making AirPods the second Apple product manufactured in India for international markets. Foxconn established the facility in August 2023, investing Rs. 3,471.20 crore (US$ 400 million) in the project. Presently, two models are in production, they are AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, with limited quantities being produced. Production is anticipated to scale up significantly within the next three to four months.

Industry analysts interpret this strategic move as part of Apple's broader effort to diversify its supply chain and minimise reliance on China, driven by increasing tariffs and ongoing geopolitical challenges. As part of its long-term vision, Apple plans to shift at least half of its export operations away from China. India, which has emerged as the world's second-largest smartphone manufacturer, is well-positioned to accommodate a substantial portion of this shift. Further supporting local manufacturing, the India Cellular and Electronics Association has pushed for reduced tariffs on finished electronic imports. Additionally, the government has implemented a Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to encourage domestic production. These measures are expected to enhance India's role as a key hub in the global electronics manufacturing landscape.
