Summary:
India’s first made-in-India GPUs are expected to be ready for technical demonstrations by late 2025, showcasing capabilities in AI, machine learning, scientific simulations, and complex computing beyond graphics. The IndiaAI Mission, with a budget of Rs. 10,372 crore (US$ 1.21 billion), aims for full-scale manufacturing by 2029. This year, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will collaborate with global chipmakers. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed plans to develop indigenous chipsets within three to four years.
In the initial bidding phase, ten companies were selected to supply 18,693 GPUs, including Nvidia H100, H200, and AMD MI325, MI300X models. Major participants include Jio Platforms, Tata Communications, and Yotta Data Services. GPU prices range from Rs. 115.85 (US$ 1.36) to Rs. 150 (US$ 1.76) per hour, lower than global rates. The government offers a 40% discount to startups, academic institutions, and students. Global firms plan to supply an additional 15,000–18,000 GPUs in the next cycle, with empanelment now quarterly. India is nearing the 50,000 GPU limit set by the US, with talks ongoing to ease it.
