Summary:
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of a new semiconductor unit under the India Semiconductor Mission. This sixth plant, a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn, will be built near Jewar airport in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). It will manufacture display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and computers, with a monthly output of 20,000 wafers and a capacity of 36 million units.
India's semiconductor sector is rapidly expanding, with state governments supporting design firms and developing advanced facilities. Students and entrepreneurs from 270 academic institutions and 70 startups are working on cutting-edge innovations. SCL Mohali has successfully taped out 20 student-developed products. The new unit will attract an investment of Rs. 3,700 crore (US$ 433.40 million). Meeting the growing demand for semiconductors, this initiative supports Prime Minister Modi's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and strengthens India's position in the global semiconductor industry.
