Summary :

India has secured the 4th position globally in income equality with a Gini Index score of 25.5, improving from 28.8 in 2011. The Gini Index measures income distribution, with lower scores indicating more equality. As per the World Bank, 171 million Indians have moved out of extreme poverty in the last decade. The share of people living below ₹183.96 (US$2.15) a day dropped from 16.2% in 2011 to 2.3% in 2022, and under the revised poverty line of ₹256.69 (US$3), it stands at 5.3%. This progress is largely due to strong economic growth and key government initiatives like Jan Dhan Yojana, Aadhaar, and Direct Benefit Transfers, which have improved financial inclusion. Welfare schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Stand-Up India, and PM Vishwakarma Yojana have also enhanced access to healthcare, food, and livelihood support. Together, these efforts are driving India towards more inclusive and equitable development.
