Summary:
Probiotics are becoming increasingly important in Indian diets as consumers focus more on gut health, immunity, and digestion. According to PharmaTrac, India's probiotics industry expanded 22% on a Moving Annual Total basis in May 2025. The market nearly quadrupled in five years, rising from Rs. 1,016 crore in 2021 to Rs. 2,070 crore in 2025. Major pharmaceutical companies dominate the sector, with new product introductions adding just Rs. 49 crore in sales over two years.
Probiotic medications account for more than 90% of the Indian market, followed by dairy products. Dairy behemoths like as Amul and Mother Dairy are actively growing, while start-ups like The Good Bug and WellBeing Nutrition are attracting investor attention. Amul sells three million gallons of probiotic buttermilk every day. Despite its low penetration, the category is quickly expanding, thanks to increased health awareness and young participation. Experts warn against misusing probiotics, as they are effective for certain gastrointestinal diseases but not all health concerns. The market's five-year CAGR is 19%.
