Summary:
In a significant move to showcase India's rich cultural heritage on the global stage, the Ministry of Culture has introduced the Global Engagement Scheme. This initiative is designed to strengthen international cultural relations, elevate India’s global image and attract more inbound tourism. A key component of this initiative is the Festival of India, which provides Indian artists with opportunities to perform on international platforms, highlighting the country’s diverse cultural expressions, including folk traditions, classical music, traditional dance and theatre. The scheme is implemented through Indian Missions abroad to maximise its outreach and impact.
Additionally, to foster international cultural collaboration, the scheme extends financial grants to Indo-Foreign Friendship Cultural Societies, encouraging cultural exchange and strengthening diplomatic ties. The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) plays a vital role in promoting Indian heritage by organising yoga sessions, dance and music classes, language programs, exhibitions and international conferences. To support artists, the initiative has empanelled 627 artists and groups, with a structured payment framework offering Rs. 35,000 (US$ 403.31) to lead artists and Rs. 7,000 (US$ 80.66) to supporting performers. Moreover, in a bid to assist senior and financially struggling artists aged 60 and above, the Financial Assistance for Veteran Artists Scheme provides a monthly aid of Rs. 6,000 (US$ 69.14). This comprehensive initiative, aimed at expanding India's cultural footprint globally, was announced by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in the Lok Sabha.
