Summary:

Dr. S. Jaishankar, India’s Union Minister for External Affairs, emphasised that India’s strategic interests align with a multipolar world, allowing the nation to strengthen global partnerships while preserving its autonomy. Speaking at Chatham House in London, he underscored how evolving global alliances create opportunities for India, particularly within the framework of United States (US) foreign policy. Reaffirming the stability of India-US relations, he pointed to the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) between the US, Australia, Japan and India, as an example of regional cooperation.

Addressing global currency dynamics, Dr. Jaishankar dismissed claims that the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) nations intends to undermine the US dollar’s dominance. On trade, he welcomed the US administration’s commitment to deepening technological and economic ties with India, highlighting ongoing negotiations led by Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. Piyush Goyal in Washington. Despite the complexities involved, he remained optimistic about progress toward finalising the India-United Kingdom (UK) Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Reiterating India’s neutral stance on global conflicts, Dr. Jaishankar stressed the importance of maintaining open channels of communication with both Russia and Ukraine. He also pointed to positive developments in India-China relations since 2024, including the reopening of the Mount Kailash pilgrimage route as a step forward in cultural diplomacy and regional stability.
