Summary:

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) is embracing artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize public healthcare services across India. To drive this initiative forward, AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh and AIIMS Rishikesh have been designated as Centres of Excellence for AI, focusing on developing and implementing AI-powered healthcare solutions. Several AI-driven tools have been introduced, including the Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) integrated with the eSanjeevani telemedicine platform, the Media Disease Surveillance (MDS) tool under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and AI algorithms for identifying Diabetic Retinopathy and detecting abnormalities in Chest X-rays. Since its implementation in April 2022, the MDS tool has issued over 4,500 event alerts, contributing to the early identification and containment of infectious disease outbreaks.

The AI-enabled CDSS has notably improved the quality of consultations on eSanjeevani by providing AI-assisted diagnostic insights. So far, the platform has benefited 196 million patients, generating 12 million AI-powered diagnoses that have ensured more accurate and timely medical interventions. AI applications have also significantly enhanced India’s tuberculosis (TB) management efforts. The Cough Against TB AI solution has boosted detection rates by 12-16%, helping to identify cases that might have been missed otherwise. Furthermore, the Prediction of Adverse TB Outcomes AI tool has led to a 27% reduction in adverse health outcomes, reinforcing the effectiveness of the country’s TB elimination programme. These AI innovations are not only streamlining healthcare decision-making but also strengthening disease surveillance and improving overall patient care. In a written statement to the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, emphasized the government’s dedication to using advanced technologies to enhance public health and build a resilient healthcare ecosystem in India.
