Summary:
An online survey indicates that 40% of Indian couples allocate over Rs. 7.5 lakh (US$ 8,750) for wedding venues, with 31% prepared to spend beyond Rs. 10 lakh (US$ 11,667). The average venue expenditure has surged to Rs. 6 lakh (US$ 7,000) in 2024, compared to Rs. 4.7 lakh (US$ 5,484) in 2023. Conducted with 2,000 participants nationwide, the survey revealed that 62% of weddings are now hosted by Gen Z couples, a 49% rise from last year. Meanwhile, millennial participation has declined to 30%, down from 54% in 2023. Weddings in India are increasingly personalised and extended, with 35% lasting three days and 32% spanning four days or more. Many couples opt for customised experiences, including tailored outfits (61%), eco-friendly choices (27%) and intimate first-look moments (21%).
Wedding planning priorities have also shifted. While expenses remain significant for 53% of couples, they are no longer the primary focus. Factors such as food, beverages and overall guest experience have become more crucial. On average, couples spend approximately 21% of their annual household income on their weddings. Technology has become integral to wedding planning, with 79% of couples using platforms like WhatsApp to coordinate event details. Additionally, wedding websites are increasingly popular for managing invitations, schedules and updates. “Weddings are no longer just about tradition, they are becoming personalised, unforgettable experiences,” said Ms. Snigdha Johar, Consumer Marketing Manager at WeddingWire India. The growing emphasis on personal expression reflects the changing preferences of today's couples.
