Summary:

According to MakeMyTrip Chairman Deep Kalra, India’s sustainable tourism sector is projected to grow significantly over the next decade—from ₹316.72 crore (US$ 37 million) to ₹1,848.96 crore (US$ 216 million). Speaking at a travel conference, he highlighted the sector’s vast potential. Globally, sustainable tourism is expected to expand from ₹2.67 lakh crore to ₹9.75 lakh crore, accounting for 10% of total travel.

Currently, sustainable tourism represents only 1–2% of India’s overall tourism, considerably lower than global trends. To address this, the Ministry of Tourism has implemented a National Strategy focused on promoting environmental sustainability, conserving biodiversity, and maintaining socioeconomic balance. The LiFE initiative encourages eco-friendly travel practices, while Swadesh Darshan 2.0 supports the development of sustainable destinations that benefit local communities. These efforts reflect the government’s commitment to environmentally responsible tourism and long-term development.
