Summary:

According to the AEPC, there are significant prospects for collaboration between Indian and Japanese textile industries, with Tokyo-based companies exhibiting substantial investment interest. Mr. Sudhir Sekhri, Chairman, indicated that many discussions with garment firms were held to explore cooperation. Indian exporters are taking part in the India Textile Trend Fair (ITTF) in Tokyo. He asked Japanese companies such as Uniqlo and YKK to invest more in India, emphasising India's commitment to satisfying Japan's strict quality requirements.

In 2024, India's garment exports to Japan totalled Rs. 2,015 crore (US$ 234.5 million), accounting for a tiny percentage of Japan's total clothing imports of Rs. 1,97,639 crore (US$23 billion). AEPC anticipates significant development opportunities, aided by duty-free trade agreements, sustainability initiatives, and flexible manufacturing through PM MITRA Parks. Key concerns include improving quality, particularly in man-made fibres (MMF), simplifying trade procedures, and passing Japan's stringent compliance standards in order to enter a wider garment market.
