Summary:
On August 26, 2021, the Ministry of Labour and Employment launched the e-Shram portal to create a robust National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW) linked to Aadhaar. This digital platform allows unorganised workers to register independently and obtain a Universal Account Number (UAN) through self-declared information. By March 3, 2025, more than 30.68 crore workers had enrolled, with women making up 53.68% of the total registrations. Fulfilling the Budget Announcement’s vision of providing a seamless gateway for social security benefits, the Ministry introduced the e-Shram “One-Stop-Solution” on October 21, 2024. This initiative streamlines access to multiple welfare schemes by consolidating them into one integrated platform.
Currently, the portal offers 13 welfare programs from different government ministries, including Pradhan Mantri Street Vendors Atmanirbhar Nidhi (PM-SVANidhi), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS), Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G), Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). To boost accessibility, the platform added multilingual support on January 7, 2025, via the Bhashini initiative, making it available in 22 Indian languages. Additionally, the e-Shram mobile app, launched on February 24, 2025, enables real-time access to these welfare services. Awareness efforts include state-level engagements, SMS campaigns, social media outreach and partnerships with platforms like National Career Service (NCS), Skill India Digital Portal, myScheme and Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (UMANG). This information was officially shared by Union Minister of State Ms. Sushri Shobha Karandlaje in a written statement to Lok Sabha.
