The country produced a record 997.828 million tonnes (MT) of coal in fiscal year 2023-24, up from 730.874 MT in 2019-20 and 893.191 MT in 2022-23. The Mines Act of 1952 governs coal mining in India, and the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) oversees the industry. The DGMS oversees safety regulations, inspections, accident investigations, and risk management. Measures for improving mine safety include Site-Specific Risk Assessment Safety Management Plans (SMPs), Principal Hazards Management Plans(PHMPs), and comprehensive training. Open Cast (OC) mines utilise environmentally friendly Surface Miners, improved safety technology, and ergonomic enhancements. Underground mines prioritise mechanisation, improved roof control, and emergency response planning. Regular monitoring and inspections assure compliance with safety regulations.
