Summary:

India is charting a new course toward self-reliance in the global aviation sector, with the government spearheading efforts to strengthen domestic aircraft production. Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr. Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, revealed plans to establish a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) focused on manufacturing regional transport aircraft. Addressing in Rajya Sabha, he stressed India’s growing expertise in aircraft design, manufacturing and maintenance, supported by forward looking policies. With domestic carriers placing orders for over 1,500 aircraft to meet increasing demand, the government’s vision is to create a strong local manufacturing ecosystem. The SPV, planned over five years, will collaborate with key industry players, evaluate current capabilities and outline a clear roadmap to boost production under the "Make in India" initiative.

The minister also pointed to efforts to up-skill the aviation workforce, mentioning 58 Flying Training Organisations (FTOs) working to train future aviation professionals. Alongside this, the government is bolstering aircraft component manufacturing and expanding Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services. He highlighted the Saras Mk2, a 19-seater Light Transport Aircraft developed by CSIR-NAL in partnership with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which features advanced composite wings, lightweight materials and cutting-edge avionics. Through these initiatives, India aims to reduce its reliance on foreign manufacturers and emerge as a global leader in aviation technology.
