Summary:
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said that over 450,000 5G base transceiver stations (BTS) had been built nationally as of July. BTS were introduced in October 2022 and are critical for mobile networks. The aim is 500,000 BTS, and further deployment is likely to increase this figure.
BTS deployment has slowed, with 3,346 new installations in July, a decrease from a peak of 9,733 in March. Major operators Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are currently merging. 5G connects all states but 38 of India's 788 districts. Jio operates in 7,764 cities, Airtel in 5,000 towns, and 5G is available in over 8,000 cities.
