Summary:

India and Malaysia have elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership following discussions between Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Anwar Ibrahim. The meetings resulted in eight agreements, including a major commitment to promote the recruitment of Indian workers in Malaysia and address concerns about illegal immigration and human trafficking. Mr. Anwar Ibrahim's first visit to India underscored the importance of this strengthened connection.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the strong economic ties between India and Malaysia, including trade conducted in rupees and Malaysian ringgit. He highlighted growth potential in areas such as semiconductors, fintech, defense, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies. Both countries agreed to review the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) and integrate India's UPI with Malaysia's PayNet. They also pledged to uphold ASEAN's centrality and work towards the peaceful resolution of regional disputes while establishing cultural chairs at Malaysian institutions.
