In July 2024, the mutual fund industry expanded significantly, with individual investors driving trends. According to AMFI data, individual investors own 61% of the industry's assets, up from 57.5% in July 2023. This reflects a broader trend where individual investors hold 88% of mutual fund assets, while institutional investors hold 39%, primarily through businesses, with some from Indian and foreign institutions.
The total assets of the mutual fund industry increased by 39.83%, rising from $556.12 billion in July 2023 to $777.58 billion in July 2024. Individual investors prefer equity-oriented schemes, investing 86% of their assets in stocks, 9% in bonds, 3% in money market funds, and 2% in ETFs/ funds of funds. In contrast, institutional investors favor liquid and money market schemes (88%), debt-oriented schemes (63%), and ETFs/FOFs (90%). The proportion of equity-oriented schemes rose to 59.9%, while the share of debt-oriented schemes decreased to 14.6%.
