According to the WIPO World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPI) 2024 report, India has risen to the top ten global intellectual property (IP) filing countries. In 2023, India experienced the largest growth in patent applications (+15.7%), marking the fifth consecutive year of double-digit growth. It ranks sixth internationally, with 64,480 patent applications, more than half of which were filed by residents. In 2023, the patent office awarded 149.4% more patents, indicating India's rapidly developing intellectual property ecosystem, while industrial design applications increased by 36.4%.
India placed fourth in worldwide trademark filings in 2023, with a 6.1% rise. Nearly 90% of these submissions were from residents, with key sectors including health (21.9%), agriculture (15.3%), and clothing (12.8%). With more than 3.2 million registrations, the country has the second-largest number of active trademarks in the world. The increase in patent, trademark, and industrial design applications from 2018 to 2023 demonstrates India's emphasis on innovation, fueled by government programs that drive economic growth and global leadership.
