From January to May 2024, India attracted 40.7 lakh international tourists, marking a 9.1% increase from the previous year. Foreign exchange earnings (FEEs) rose by 22.5% to $488.62 billion (Rs. 1.1 lakh crore). In May 2024, FTAs totaled 6 lakh, up 0.3% from May 2023, with FEEs reaching $2.12 billion (Rs. 17,762 crore), a 3.2% year-on-year increase.
Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, stated in the Lok Sabha that the steady rise in foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) and foreign exchange earnings (FEEs) reflects strong economic growth and development in the tourism industry. He presented data showing an increase in FTAs: 10.5 lakh in 2021, 85.9 lakh in 2022, and over 1.9 crore visits projected for 2023. The minister also highlighted government measures such as credit packages for tourism entrepreneurs and the 'Dekho Apna Desh' campaign.
