India’s renewable energy capacity has increased by 165% over the last decade, rising from 76.38 GW in 2014 to 203.1 GW in 2024, according to Union Minister Pralhad Joshi. During a Rajya Sabha discussion on grants for the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, he announced that India now ranks fourth globally in renewable energy capacity. The country has made tremendous progress in solar and wind power, with solar energy capacity growing from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 85.47 GW by 2024. India has reached 200 GW of capacity from non-fossil fuels, marking a nearly 30-fold increase in solar energy.

Renewable energy is critical to India's long-term prosperity, and the country has one of the fastestgrowing renewable energy sectors in the world. India currently ranks fourth in total renewable energy (RE) installed capacity, matching industrialized nations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's COP26 commitment targets 500 GW of non-fossil energy generation by 2030. Energy security is a top priority, and the Ministry of Renewable Energy's budget has nearly doubled from $1.19 billion to $2.38 billion. The proportion of non-fossil fuels in total installed capacity has increased from 32.30% to 45.54%, while renewable energy output grew by 86% between 2013-14 and 2023-24, with solar tariffs drastically decreasing.
