According to a new analysis titled Assessing the Net Impact of e-Commerce on Employment and Consumer Welfare in India, online sellers have created 15.8 million jobs, including 3.5 million for women. The analysis, released by Union Minister Piyush Goyal and conducted by the Pahle India Foundation, shows that e-commerce significantly boosts employment, with online retailers employing 54% more people and nearly tripling the number of female employees.
The survey highlights that e-commerce is expanding in tier 3 cities, where customers spend more than US$ 59.61 (Rs. 5,000) per month online, compared to larger cities. A survey of 2,062 online sellers, 2,031 offline merchants, and 8,209 e-commerce consumers across 35 locations found that 60% of vendors reported improved sales and 52% saw higher earnings after transitioning online. The research advocates for offline retailers to adopt e-commerce or an omnichannel approach, emphasizing the benefits for vendors in smaller cities and micro-enterprises. Consumer behavior is increasingly shifting towards online shopping due to convenience, variety, and accessibility.
