Summary:
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY) is a government initiative aimed at establishing modern infrastructure and efficient supply chains to strengthen India's food processing industry. It seeks to reduce agricultural waste, increase processing levels, enhance farmer profits, and create rural jobs. PMKSY provides credit-linked financial assistance for developing food processing infrastructure, including cold storage and refrigerated trucks. Its Integrated Cold Chain sub-scheme has significantly reduced wastage in Telangana's food sector.
Since 2016-17, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has implemented PMKSY to enhance post-harvest infrastructure and processing facilities. The government has approved an Action Plan to construct steel silos under a PPP model, with a 24.25 lakh metric tonne (LMT) capacity currently under development. The Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF), launched in 2020, provides loans for cold storage, warehouses, and processing facilities, aiming to reduce crop wastage and increase value addition across India.
