As India aims to become a $35 trillion economy by 2047, automation in manufacturing is expected to enhance female recruitment and promote diversity, according to Mr. Subburathinam P., Chief Strategy Officer at TeamLease. Automation, introduced gradually in traditionally male-dominated industries, is increasing female participation and is anticipated to continue as it becomes more widespread.

 

Despite this progress, challenges such as cultural norms, a lack of role models, and work-life balance concerns persist. Women remain underrepresented in India’s manufacturing sector, making up about 15-20% of the workforce. However, sectors adopting automation, like electric vehicles and telecom OEMs, are seeing a rise in female representation. The electronics sector has seen significant improvement, with 70-80% of its workforce being female, and textiles are also employing more women. In contrast, automation in male-dominated sectors such as metals and chemicals has been slower, perpetuating gender disparities.
