Summary:

Mr. Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO of the Digi Yatra Foundation, has indicated that India intends to deploy facial recognition technology (FRT) for international air travel, with a pilot project scheduled for June 2025. This effort aims to improve the airport experience by allowing passengers to securely store their identification and travel documents on a mobile platform, thereby eliminating the need for physical ID checks. Currently, the Digi Yatra service is available for domestic flights, providing contactless entry and security clearance at major airports, including those in Delhi and Mumbai.

Additionally, Mr. Khadakbhavi has unveiled plans for e-passports for Indian international travelers. The initial rollout will focus on foreign passengers, with Indian nationals gaining access once they are issued. Countries such as Singapore and various EU nations have already implemented epassports.
