Summary:

Mr. Srikant Nagulapalli, Additional Secretary for Electricity, predicts that India's electricity consumption will rise by 15 GW per year over the next six years, up from 11 GW per year previously. By 2030, an additional 85 GW will be needed during sunlight hours, and more than 90 GW will be required for peak demand outside solar hours. This will necessitate significant increases in coal, solar, wind, storage, and transmission capacity, including 40 GW of long-duration storage batteries.

He emphasized the Ministry of Power's goal of achieving 500 GW from non-fossil fuels by 2030, with over 200 GW already accomplished and 300 GW projected, primarily from solar and wind. The strategy prioritizes renewable energy zones in Rajasthan and Gujarat, offshore wind farms near Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, and green hydrogen, particularly around coastlines. The Indian grid will support 170 GW nationwide, with 40 GW of battery storage and 19 GW of pumped hydro storage planned over the next six years.
