Summary:
Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers' Welfare, and Rural Development, announced plans to invest US$ 2.15 billion (Rs. 18,000 crore) in developing 100 agricultural export clusters and US$ 810.7 million (Rs. 6,800 crore) to enhance self-sufficiency in pulse production. He acknowledged the sector’s challenges and pledged to address them through engagement with farmers and their associations. Chouhan urged political parties to view farmers as more than just vote banks, emphasizing solutions through communication.
He outlined a vision for a climate-resilient agriculture system, including 50,000 climate-friendly villages and 1,500 new seed varieties. The government plans to provide farmers with digital identities and buy crops at the minimum support price (MSP) only when necessary. The focus is on a 'One Health' approach, integrating human, animal, plant, and environmental health. The investment also includes US$ 166,905.10 (Rs. 1.40 crore) in modern post-harvest infrastructure and integrating 1,500 mandis into the e-NaM initiative. The goal is to revive 2,500 seed varieties across 200 districts and develop model pulse and oilseed villages covering 12 million hectares.
