Summary:

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) predicts that India's tourism sector will grow dramatically over the next decade, reaching $523 billion—more than doubling its current size of $256 billion. This growth will create 18 million additional jobs, bringing total employment to 63 million. WTTC President Julia Simpson highlighted India's rich cultural heritage and hospitality as key attractions, with tourism accounting for 7% of GDP.

Simpson noted tourism's environmental impact, stating that it accounts for approximately 5% of India's greenhouse gas emissions, primarily CO2. Despite the sector's growth, emissions have not increased at the same rate, indicating improved efficiency. She called for a partnership with the government to promote sustainable practices, particularly in aviation, by incentivizing the production of sustainable fuel. Simpson emphasized the importance of conserving coastal regions and natural landscapes, along with India's commitment to renewable energy under Prime Minister Modi's leadership.
