Summary:
The Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) has approved 56 new Watershed Development Projects in 10 states with a budget of Rs. 700 crore (US$ 80.9 million). These projects will cover 5,000 hectares each and focus on land recovery, soil conservation, rainwater harvesting, and pasture development. The aim is to combat land degradation, increase farmers' income, and improve climate resilience.
The Watershed Development Component of PMKSY aims to improve degraded, rain-fed areas using an integrated approach. Previous WDC-PMKSY 1.0 projects have boosted groundwater levels, water availability, crop yields, and farmers' incomes. WDC-PMKSY 2.0 will further enhance natural resource management and help farmers adapt to climate change. In 2021-22, 1,150 projects covering 50 lakh hectares were approved for sustainable agricultural development.
