Summary:

Union Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the National Turmeric Board to boost turmeric exports and double production to 20,00,000 tonnes in five years. The board will focus on research, value-added products, and traditional knowledge. India, contributing 70% of global turmeric production, aims to strengthen its position further by increasing production and exports, ensuring continued global dominance in the turmeric market.

 

India grows over 30 varieties of turmeric across 20 states, making it the largest producer, consumer, and exporter. In 2022-23, India cultivated turmeric on 3,24,000 hectares, producing 1,161,000 tonnes. The government aims to increase exports to Rs. 8,657 crore (US$ 1 billion) by 2030. Palle Ganga Reddy is the first chairperson of the new National Turmeric Board, headquartered in Nizamabad, Telangana.
