Summary:
The TATA Aircraft Complex was inaugurated at TATA Advanced Systems Limited in Vadodara, Gujarat, on October 28, 2024, marking a milestone in India’s defence self-reliance. This facility will manufacture C295 military transport aircraft, featuring India’s first private sector Final Assembly Line. Of 56 aircraft, the first 16 will arrive from Airbus, with 40 produced domestically.
India’s journey to self-reliance in defence has transformed it from a major arms importer to a hub for indigenous production. In 2023-24, domestic defence production reached US$ 15.11 billion, a 174% increase from US$ 5.53 billion in 2014-15. Approximately 65% of defence equipment is now produced domestically, bolstered by strategic policies and initiatives like Make in India.
