Summary:

India is becoming self-sufficient in strategic application data, largely due to NavIC, a satellite navigation system similar to GPS. At the GeoSmart India 2024 conference, In-SPACe Chairperson Mr. Pawan Goenka emphasized the importance of self-reliance for defense, civilian, and industrial needs, reducing the risk of supply interruptions. Developed by ISRO, NavIC covers India and a 1,500-kilometer radius, providing precise position and timing data alongside GPS.

India is increasing its reliance on homegrown communication satellites through ISRO's NewSpace India Limited (NSIL). However, there is a need for a consistent supply to further reduce dependence on foreign satellites. Mr. Srikant Sastri, Chairperson of the Geospatial Data Promotion and Development Committee (GDPDC), highlighted India’s goal of dominating critical technologies in civil aviation and mapping. GDPDC plans to establish centers of excellence in six key industries during FY24.
