Summary:
Southeastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a Coal India subsidiary in Chhattisgarh, has achieved a significant milestone by placing its Gevra and Kusmunda coal mines second and fourth on WorldAtlas.com’s list of the world’s largest coal mines. These mines, located in Korba, generate approximately 100 million tonnes of coal each year, accounting for nearly 10% of India’s total production. The Gevra mine, which has been operational since 1981, has a capacity of 70 million tonnes, while Kusmunda produced over 50 million tonnes in the fiscal year 2024. Both mines employ modern, environmentally friendly mining machinery.
SECLs mines remove overburden using Heavy Earth Moving Machinery, such as 240-ton dumpers and 42-cubic-meter shovels, for blast-free operations. SECL Chairman Dr. Prem Sagar Mishra congratulated Chhattisgarh on hosting two of the world’s largest coal mines and thanked all stakeholders for their efforts.
