Summary:

According to NPCIL, India's third indigenous 700 MWe nuclear power reactor has reached criticality, marking a major milestone on the path to commercialization. This reactor, located at the Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP) in Rawatbhata, is the first of a new series of Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). Announced on September 19, 2024, RAPP-7 demonstrates NPCIL's capability in deploying these reactors throughout India.

Criticality signals the reactor's shift from construction to operation. Tests will be performed before connecting to the grid, with power levels steadily increasing based on AERB certifications. The RAPP 7&8 project in Rawatbhata comprises six operational units totaling 1,180 MWe. NPCIL operates 24 reactors with a total capacity of 8,180 MWe and has eight units under development, including RAPP-7, with another ten reactors scheduled for completion by 2031-32.
