Summary:

The Goods and Services Tax (GST), which replaced several Central and State levies with a single framework, has completely changed India's indirect taxation structure since its implementation in 2017. Under the motto "One Nation, One Tax," it has decreased tax cascading, increased transparency, and established a single national market. Digital solutions for e-invoicing, tax payments, registration, and return filing have improved business operations and streamlined compliance. By rationalising tax rates, expanding exemptions, and streamlining procedures, the 2025 Next-Generation GST amendments substantially enhanced the system and benefited both consumers and businesses, particularly MSMEs. Cooperative federalism has been reinforced by GST, which has also increased tax efficiency, stimulated investment, and fostered inclusive, sustainable, and technology-driven economic growth throughout India.
