
Summary:
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) achieved a record freight movement of 145.5 MMT in FY25, reflecting a 20.86% CAGR since FY14. Key commodities such as coal and iron ore accounted for over 68% of the total volume. Passenger traffic exceeded 1.61 crore. The number of operational National Waterways increased from 24 to 29, supported by Rs. 6,434 crore in investments to enhance infrastructure and digital initiatives such as LADIS and RIS.
To further promote inland water transport (IWT), the government introduced the "Jalvahak" Cargo Promotion Scheme in December 2024, offering a 35% reimbursement on operational costs and launching scheduled cargo services. The Union Budget for 2025–26 extended the tonnage tax regime to inland vessels. Under the Maritime India Vision 2030, private investment frameworks, freight villages, and logistics parks are being developed, targeting a 5% modal share and over 200 MMT of cargo movement by 2030.
