Summary:

Over the past 12 years, India's business environment has changed due to improvements in digital governance, regulatory simplification, compliance reduction, and enhanced market access, which have increased investor confidence and made the country more competitive globally. Its competitiveness increased from 43rd in 2021 to 41st in 2025, and its World Bank Doing Business ranking improved from 142nd in 2014 to 63rd in 2019. Strong digital governance is reflected in India's continued position at the top of the GovTech Maturity Index. The number of recognised companies increased from 502 in 2016 to over 2.23 lakh by March 2026, generating 23.3 lakh jobs, demonstrating the tremendous expansion of the startup ecosystem. Compliance was made easier by programs like Startup India, SPICe+, MCA21, and Udyam. Investment, innovation, and MSME growth are being strengthened by more changes in logistics, taxation, UPI, GeM, and GatiShakti.
