Summary:

In FY 2025–2026, the FSSAI and State Authorities improved enforcement and compliance across the country, greatly strengthening India's food safety ecosystem. After testing 1,65,747 samples and conducting over 3,97,009 inspections, 17.16% of the samples were found to be non-compliant. Authorities obtained 1,756 convictions, settled 23,580 adjudication cases, and imposed fines totaling Rs. 154.87 crore. To further safeguard customers, 945 food recalls were started. The significance of state-led enforcement is demonstrated by the fact that about 98% of food business operators are still subject to state jurisdiction. In addition to supporting India's export competitiveness through improved quality assurance frameworks and national regulatory coordination initiatives, improved institutional capacity, quicker legal proceedings, and more robust compliance systems are increasing food traceability, consumer protection, and market trust.
