An important step toward the adoption of clean energy and sustainable transportation will be taken when India launches its first hydrogen-powered train. On the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, Indian Railways has authorised a 10-coach train powered by hydrogen fuel cells. The train will run at up to 75 kmph while only emitting water vapour thanks to a 1,200-kW hydrogen fuel cell system. Indian Railways has set up a hydrogen storage and refuelling facility at Jind with the required safety permits in order to support the project. Incorporated are sophisticated safety systems, such as monitoring systems and leak detectors. The project is anticipated to support net-zero objectives, increase green mobility, lessen reliance on fossil fuels, and encourage domestic technology innovation in rail transportation.
