Summary:
With a strategy centred on exports, value addition, and sustainable fisheries development, India is bolstering its position in the global seafood market. Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Rajiv Ranjan Singh discussed ways to increase the competitiveness of seafood exports. To improve the seafood ecosystem, the government will host a two-day "Chintan Shivir" in Visakhapatnam on June 5 - 6, 2026, involving ministries, exporters, entrepreneurs, and fisheries departments. In order to facilitate the adoption of technology, infrastructure, and value-added production, authorities are investigating a specific PLI framework for seafood MSMEs. The project intends to grow the number of seafood exporters from 1,200 to around 5,000. To sustainably assist India's blue economy, focus areas include marine plastic waste recycling, GI tagging, SPS compliance, traceability systems, and tuna development.
