With 99.6% of its broad-gauge network electrified by March 2026, up from roughly 20% in 2014, Indian Railways has developed into one of the most advanced and heavily electrified train networks in the world. Compared to 21,801 km previously, 69,873 route kilometers have been electrified, saving around Rs. 6,000 crore and cutting diesel use by roughly 180 crore liters in 2024–2025. Currently operating about 25,000 trains per day, the system carried a record 741 crore passengers in 2025–2026. Renewing 54,600 km of track, expanding Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat services, and investing Rs. 2,78,000 crore in new high-speed corridors are all examples of modernization. AI surveillance, digital upgrades, and indigenous safety systems like Kavach are increasing productivity and connectedness across the country.
