Summary:

The Indian Navy has taken a significant step towards self-reliance by signing a Project Sanction Order under the Make-I category with Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited for the design and development of a six-megawatt (MW) Medium Speed Marine Diesel Engine. The agreement was formalised on 2 April 2025 at South Block, New Delhi, in the presence of Secretary (Defence Production) Mr Sanjeev Kumar and Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Mr Krishna Swaminathan. The prototype engine, which will incorporate over 50% indigenous content, is set to be developed at a cost of ₹270 crore (US$ 31.61 million), with the Government of India funding 70% of the project. In addition to this, the initiative will also involve the creation of a detailed design for diesel engines ranging from three to 10 MW, intended for both Main Propulsion and Power Generation on Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard vessels.

Traditionally, India has depended on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) for highcapacity diesel engines, making this project a crucial milestone in strengthening domestic marine engine development. This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s vision, championed by Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi, to indigenise key defence technologies and achieve Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance). By reducing reliance on foreign suppliers, this endeavour will bolster indigenous manufacturing capabilities, conserve foreign exchange reserves and foster growth within India's defence industrial ecosystem.
